Ireland Proclaims Year-old Smoking Ban A Success

On the heels of St. Patrick's Day, "Kiss me, I'm Irish" has taken on a new meaning across Ireland. No longer do many Irish men and women taste like an ashtray.

The smoking ban enacted across Ireland last year has been a resounding success. The government claims a 94%-97% compliance rate, fueled by two factors:

  • fines are stiff: the equivalent of $3,900 per violation.
